What/How can you find out information about these questions

What action has been taken to try and prevent the technology developing?

What action has been taken to try and prevent the technology developing?

There has been protests against genetically modified foods all over the world like in Canada, U.S and other countries. Over two million people were in the protest. They were all at the Montreal protest against GMO (Genetically Modified Organisms) and Monsanto.

What are the problems with this technology?

What are the problems with this technology?

There are a few problems with Genetically Modified Foods like,
  • Unintended harm to other organisms
  • Reduced effectiveness of pesticides - Just as some populations of mosquitoes developed resistance to the now-banned DDT (Dichlorodiphenyltrichloroethane), lots of people are sure that insects will become resistant to b.t (Bacillus thuringiensis) or other crops that have been genetically modified to create their own pesticides
  • Gene transfer to non-target species
  • People with allergies - Lots of kids in the US and Europe have developed a life-threatening allergies to peanuts and other food. There's a possibility that introducing a gene into a plant may create a new allergen or cause an allergic reaction
  • Unknown effects to human health

What foods are affected by this technology?

What foods are affected by this technology?

The things that are affected are:
  • Cheese
  • Salmon
  • Goat
  • Milk
  • Plums
  • Sunset Papaya Cultivar
  • Flour
  • Vegetable Oil
  • Meat
  • Rennet
And more...

What is the science behind genetically modified foods?

What is the science behind genetically modified foods?

To make genetically modified food (GM Food), you need to know science. Genetically modified foods are made from organisms that have had some changes put into their DNA (Deoxyribonucleic acid) using the methods of genetic engineering. These techniques have allowed for the introduction of new crop traits as well as a far greater control over a food's genetic structure that previously afforded by methods like 'selective breeding' or 'mutation breeding'
